Dorian DiscoveryDIS-80132 Telemann for Trumpet
In 1722, Georg Philipp Telemann, the most sought after composer in Germany, found himself in a quandary. He had been offered the post of Kantor of the Leipzig Thomaskirche, a plum position for any German composer of the period. At the time it was socially unacceptable for a composer to write for both liturgical and secular settings. With this in mind, Telemann used the offer to leverage a higher salary and greater artistic freedom in Hamburg where he was Kantor of the Hamburg Johanneum and secured the post of music director at the Hamburg Opera. Thus, liberating composers from conservative church dogma, he set a social and musical precedent.- Stephen Burns
