The Gurrufio Ensemble, founded in 1984, is the leader of the new movement of instrumental Venezuelan music. Luis Julio Toro (flute), Cristobal Soto (mandolin), Cheo Hurtado (cuatro, guitar) and David Pena (double bass) are young masters of this celebrated form as both soloists and accompanists. This group is considered the most important of the genre not only for its virtuosity but also for its modern feel, expressed through its mastery of traditional urban Venezuelan music. - Jun Ishihashi |
