The motet has a long and complicated history. The word itself has been used to refer to a whole range of vocal genres and styles in the developement of western European music, from the complex polytextual French/Latin motets of the Middle Ages to the contrapuntal polyphonic motets of Josquin or Palestrina in the Renaissance, to the Baroque sacred vocal concerti heard in this recording.
