The Polka - as a Czech dance - always had an especially strong appeal for Smetana, and finding ever greater and more varied riches in this form was something he regarded as a real challenge to his originality. This fascination lasted throughout his life. He wrote over thirty pieces in polka form, not to mention many others disguised under different titles. Smetana's lifelong aim in elevating this popular folk-dance to the level of high musical art culminates in the "Four Polkas" that make up the first volume of his Czech Dances.
