Musica Dolce

Works by Caccini, Monteverdi, Rossi, D'India and Others

Julianne Baird, Soprano

Colin Tilney, Harpsichord

DOR-90123 Cover - 16565 Bytes Caccini wrote the first music recorded here, but the style he originated was later taken to distant, more expressive heights by greater composers, notably Monteverdi-but also, hardly less notably, by Rossi, d'India and Barbara Strozzi-who brought more intense eloquence to the musical line without destroying Caccini's prized clarity of speech.   All these composers-and they are representative of many other seventeenth-century Italians whose songbooks are treasuries of mostly undiscovered delights-recognize the power of music to raise and quell the passions.
       - Colin Tilney (1990)
