Dorian RecordingsDOR-90123Works by Caccini, Monteverdi, Rossi, D'India and Others Julianne Baird, Soprano Colin Tilney, Harpsichord
Caccini wrote the first music recorded here, but the style he originated was later taken to distant, more expressive heights by greater composers, notably Monteverdi-but also, hardly less notably, by Rossi, d'India and Barbara Strozzi-who brought more intense eloquence to the musical line without destroying Caccini's prized clarity of speech. All these composers-and they are representative of many other seventeenth-century Italians whose songbooks are treasuries of mostly undiscovered delights-recognize the power of music to raise and quell the passions.- Colin Tilney (1990)
