Dorian RecordingsDOR-90124MUSIC OF FRESCOBALDI Colin Tilney, Harspichord
When a former student of Frescobaldi's, Bartolmeo Grassi, wrote his afterword to the 1628 edition of the instrumental canzone, Frescobaldi had been organist of the Cappella Giulia at St. Peter's in Rome for twenty years. Since 1614 he had worked for the powerful Aldobrandini family; he was on good terms with the equally influential Barberinis, whose service he was to enter some years later; the art-loving Gonzagas had tried - and failed - to entice him away from Rome to their seat in Mantua; he astutely cultivated relations with other prominent patrons through dedications like the one in his second book of toccatas to Luigi Gallo, a well connected bishop and papal nuncio; and his name was cited by historians among the most illustrious figures in the musical life of the city.
