In the Baroque, the arousal of the affections - the discrete states of emotions such as fear, love, hate, anger and joy - was considered the principal objective of poetry and music. Whether solo or ensemble, instrumental music of the late Baroque emerged in three principal forms: (1) the suite, a loosely organized series of stylized dance movements (a very popular form for keyboard pieces);
(2) the sonata, a chamber work for one or more soloists (i.e, the trio sonata); and
(3) the concerto (from the Italian conserere, "to agree, to get together" or the Latin concertare - to fight or struggle).
