Joseph Haydn composed over one hundred symphonies, but performances and studies of this genre generally have been limited to the late works, usually the "Paris" and "London" Symphonies, and a few early ones such as the "Farewell" and the "Passione," and the sequence: "Le matin," "Le midi," and "Le soir." Although there have been recordings of selected early symphonies, as a whole, Haydn's symphonies composed before 1776 have not gained the familiarity and popularity they deserve.
