Haydn composed over 170 works for the baryton. They include: Duos for two barytons, Sonatas for baryton and 'cello, Quintets and Octets for baryton, strings, and two horns; and most important of all, 123 Divertimenti for baryton, viola, and 'cello, and the 3 for baryton, violin and 'cello, which together are now known as the Baryton Trios. This fortuitous meeting of Haydn, the creative genius, and Esterhazy, the demanding patron, resulted in a unique and large repertoire that not only contains some of his most touching music but also music of great originality and intense emotion.- John Hsu
