By the end of the eighteenth century, Vivaldi's music was largely forgoten. Only hand-in-hand with the Bach revival of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries did Vivaldi enjoy something like a renaissance, though, it is true, the comparison with Bach did not always flatter him, for he was seen by many as merely an unsophisticated precursor. . . . Only recently, through the efforts of musicologists and historical performers, has the full extent of Vivaldi's acheivements as a composer become apparent, and only recently has his music received performances stylish and commited enough to afford us some hint of what all the fuss was about those three hundred years ago.
