Around the autumn of 1706, just twenty-one years old but aready recognized as a performer and composer, Handel left Hamburg, where he had worked since 1703, and travelled to Italy, at the invitation of a Medici prince. Italy was then the center of European music life, and Handel , whose prodigious talents was matched by his openness to new experiences, relished the opportunity to work there. He visited every major city, won the support of importatnt patrons, met the leading musicians of the day and absorbed the latest styles of vocal and instrumental music He composed literally hundreds of works in different genres over the next three years, including the first Italian opera and his first oratorios. …
