Dorian Sono LuminusDSL-90803Stephen Schultz ![]() Stephen Schultz takes on the daunting task of playing all five parts of these Concerti for Five Flutes from Boismortier - a feat never before attempted or accomplished! These Six Concerti for Flute are a welcome addition to the 18th century repertoire as they represent authentic works written specifically for these instruments, not all purpose chamber music for any combination of treble instruments. Such works are unique in the annals of flute repertoire. The French composer Joseph Bodin de Boismortier wrote a great deal of popular music. The transverse flute was his favorite instrument and he considerably extended its repertory. Boismortier's music demonstrates great facility, and one regrets that he wrote so few works on a large scale. It is difficult not to agree with La Borde, who said, He will always be regarded by professionals as a good harmonist anyone who will take the trouble to excavate this abandoned mine might find enough gold dust there to make up an ingot. He was a French Baroque composer of instrumental music, cantatas, opera ballets, and vocal music. Boismortier was purely a composer and one of the first to have no patrons; he made his living simply by writing new works of music. Stephen Schultz, called among the most flawless artists on the baroque flute by the San Jose Mercury News, and flute extraordinaire by the New Jersey Star-Ledger, is solo and co-Principal flutist with the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and performs with other leading early music groups such as Musica Angelica of Los Angeles, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, Chatham Baroque, and American Bach Soloists. Concert tours have taken him throughout Europe and North America with featured appearances at the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York, the Musikverein in Vienna, Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall in London, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Göttingen International Handel Festival, Library of Congress in Washington D.C., and the Tage Alter Musik Festival, Regensburg. A graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Holland, Schultz also holds several degrees from the California Institute of the Arts and the California State University of San Francisco. Currently he is an Associate Teaching Professor in Music History and Flute at Carnegie Mellon University and director of the Carnegie Mellon Baroque Orchestra. Mr. Schultz is also a featured faculty member of the Jeanne Baxtresser International Flute Master Class at Carnegie Mellon University and at the International Baroque Institute at Longy School of Music.
