Dorian Sono LuminusDSL-90907SONATAS FOR LUTE & STRINGS John Schneiderman Lute Elizabeth Blumenstock Violin William Skeen Violoncello ![]() Bernhard Joachim Hagen might easily have thought himself an anachronism by the time he died in Ansbach in 1787 at the age of 66. Although this was still an age of aristocratic patronage and he remained a court musician, his true royal patron had been dead for decades. The very court he served for forty years had been annexed, marginalized, and was about to disappear entirely. While he spent his career as a violinist, it would be for a now-obsolete instrument he would be remembered. For Hagen also played the lute, and only the love of a cultured employer for this instrument had allowed it to flourish one final time before its rediscovery in the 20th century. Today, Hagen is regarded as perhaps the lute's last great composer, extending a tradition with roots deep in the past a further generation beyond the death in 1750 of the great Silvius Weiss of Dresden. Although he is now considered historically significant, information about Hagen's actual life is unfortunately limited.
