Musical exchange between the Old and New Worlds has been intense ever since the discovery of the Americas. It is true that more music has come from Europe to America than has travelled the other direction. It is also true that all the music that has been produced and exported by the New World has carried with it the seeds of the native feelings and sensibility, and has acquired charming overtones in the process. A good example is the "habanera," an African dance adopted by Spain, from whence it went to Cuba, then back to France to form a substantial part of the opera Carmen by Georges Bizet
