Prothimia suavissima sive sonatarum selectissimarum
" A Desire for the Choicest Sonatas"

THE MUSIC
T
he title of this collection is more than idle praise, or a mere marketing tool, for these sonatas are indeed the "choicest" of their day.   They could easily be called the Greatest Hits of their time!

Prothimia suavissima sive sonatarum selectissimarum, is a fascinating collection of mid-seventeenth-century small-ensemble sonatas.   The twenty-four sonatas are engagingly well crafted, often alternating strict fugal sections with strikingly quirky passages that meld the rich sounds of late-Renaissance harmonies with the new and rapidly developing tonal palettes emanating from Italy during this period.

Small compositional tricks and turns, diversity of instrumentation, and a variety of known and anonymous composers are all part of the great adventure that is Prothimia suavissima.   Several questions have been answered, but many discoveries are still being unearthed as research into the world of seventeenth-century instrumental works continues.   In the meantime, please sit back and enjoy these “choicest sonatas.”

THE PERFORMERS
I
t is no wonder then that Chatham Baroque excites audiences with dazzling technique and artful interpretation.   In recent years the trio has taken its performances and educational programs to Canada, Mexico, the Caribean and all over the United States.

In its hometown, Chatham Baroque is repeatedly listed among the Pittsburgh Post Gazette's “Top 50 Cultural Forces.”   In 2006 the ensemble's concert with guest artist Chris Norman was ranked among the “Ten Best Classical Performances” by the Post-Gazette.   In February 2007 Chatham Baroque worked with the Pittsburgh Opera Center to present Francesco Cavalli's Ormindo, the latest of several such exciting collaborations in recent years.
