John Hammond Jr Legendary Blues Artist John Hammond Jr. begins his Australian tour at Ruby's Lounge in Belgrave, Victoria on Thursday, November 3, 2011.

John Hammond Jr. is a 2011 Blues Hall of fame inductee, Blues Music Award winner 2011, 2004, 2003 for best acoustic artist of the year, 2002 for Best Acoustic Album for his Tom Waits produced Wicked Grin and 1985 Grammy award winner, John Hammond Jr, is arguably the best exponent of acoustic blues guitar in the world.

His music career spans nearly 50 years, has released over 30 albums, scoring a soundtrack along the way, (Little Big Man - starring Dustin Hoffman) and the freight train, that is John Hammond Jr., keeps barrelling along.   “He's a great force of nature.   John sounds like a big train coming.   He chops them all down.” - Tom Waits

Hammond has earned the respect of many blues legends like John Lee Hooker, Roosevelt Sykes, Duane Allman, Robbie Robertson, and Charlie Musselwhite, all of whom have contributed their musical talents to Hammond's records.   He is the only musician to boast having Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton in his band at the same time - even if it was only for a short time.

John plays solo and acoustic; a National Steel, Guild 12-String and Stubbs 6-String guitars and harmonica.   “John Hammond is a master… a virtuoso, a conjurer… a modernist… he's in a very small circle of men with a guitar and a harmonica.   Jimmy Reed, Howlin' Wolf, Bob Dylan.   The guitar is an orchestra.” - T Bone Burnett

Linn Records Logo TM Sir Charles Mackerras Conductor Sir Charles Mackerras dies at the age of 84.

Born November 17, 1925; died July 14, 2010

Everyone at Linn Records is very sad at the news of the passing of Sir Charles Mackerras.   Although it was known that he was ill, he took a very sudden turn for the worse and his death came as a shock, especially given his joie de vivre and love for life.   Even at 84 he had immense personal charisma and endless energy.   Although we had enjoyed his performances for many years before, Linn Records' professional association with Sir Charles began in 2002 with the recording of the Mozart Requiem with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.   This was the beginning of a musical adventure everyone at Linn Records would all enjoy.

Their musical complicity has been compared to the skill of two trapeze artists or the telepathic communion of a pair of jazz saxophonists!   Susie Napper and Margaret Little, the two gambists of Les Voix humaines, have been thrilling audiences worldwide with dashing performances of early and contemporary music for viols since 1985.   They are renowned for their spectacular arrangements of a wide variety of music for two viols and have become a world reference for the music of Sainte-Colombe.   After being awarded a DIAPASON D'OR for their fourth volume of Sainte-Colombe's Concerts a deux violes esgales, they received the Opus Award 2007 for PERFORMERS OF THE YEAR from the Conseil québécois de la musique.

Les Voix humaines has invited prestigious artists to join them in concert and recordings, such as Wieland and Barthold Kuijken, Charles Daniels, Suzie LeBlanc, Rinat Shaham, Matthew White, Eric Milnes, Skip Sempe and Stephen Stubbs.   The duo is regularly joined by some of Montreal's finest young gambists to form the Voix Humaines Consort of viols specializing in the vast 17th-century repertoire for viol consort and presents joint projects with Les Voix baroques (Matthew White's vocal ensemble).

Les Voix humaines has recorded over thirty discs which have received critical acclaim and prestigious awards (DIAPASON D'OR, Choc du Monde de la Musique, Repertoire-Classica 10, Goldperg 5, Classics Today 10/10, Prix Opus, etc).   Their albums include the complete Poeticall Musicke of Tobias Hume, The 4 Seasons of Christopher Simpson, the complete Le Nymphe di Rheno of Johannes Schenck, several discs with soprano Suzie LeBlanc and countertenor Daniel Taylor, a Telemann disc with renowned Belgian flutist Barthold Kuijken and a Marais disc with world famous gambist Wieland Kuijken.   Their recording of the complete Concerts a deux violes esgales by Sainte-Colombe (4 double CDs) is a world premiere.

This is the first time a Norwegian CD has been nominated in three categories.   Only two Norwegian performers - Leif Ove Andsnes and Truls Mørk - have been nominated before for GRAMMY awards, and only Truls Mørk has actually received one.   The prize for best sound production in surround was awarded for the first time in 2006.   2L (Lindberg Lyd) was also in 2006 nominated for their Surround Sound work with IMMORTAL NYSTEDT (2L29SACD).

The 51st Annual GRAMMY Awards will be held on February 8, 2009, at Staples Center in Los Angeles and will be broadcast live in high-definition TV and 5.1 surround sound on CBS.

2L formats “These GRAMMY nominations are a strong motivation for us to further explore the extreme possibilities of surround sound.   There is no method available today to reproduce the exact perception of attending a live performance.   That leaves us with the art of illusion when it comes to recording music.   As recording engineers and producers we need to do exactly the same as any good musician; interpret the music and the composer's intentions and adapt to the media where we perform.”

Linn Records Logo TM CKD 285 Cover Success for the Dunedin Consort at the Gramophone Awards!

Classic FM Gramaphone Award

Linn Records is thrilled to announce the Dunedin Consort's highly acclaimed recording, Messiah (CKD 285), has won the baroque vocal category at the Classic FM Gramophone Awards 2007.

This is the first time the Dunedin Consort, and the first time Linn Records have been presented with this prestigious honour.

Achieving the award in spite of such tough competition is a fantastic achievement both for the group and Linn Records.   Following the album's release in November 2006 critics hailed it as “the Messiah of choice”, elevating this historically informed recording to monumental status.

John Butt, director of the Dunedin Consort, said, “I'm absolutely delighted that this recording has been so well received.   There was always a risk in trying to recreate something of the spirit of a specific performance, with some unusual versions and a balance of soloists and chorus quite unlike most recordings of Messiah.   But we were exceptionally fortunate in having our very best performers and, of course, the superlative sound and production of Linn.   In all, a tribute to all those supporters who thought it worth sponsoring this recording - their generous hunch has certainly paid off.”

The Dunedin Consort recording of Bach's St Matthew Passion is due for release in Easter 2008.   This recording promises to be as memorable as their version of Messiah.
